An exciting start to the New Year!

Nous sommes extrêmement chanceux à l’Ecolint de voir autant d’occasions s’offrir à nous de développement  professionnel et d’engagement intellectuel. Nous avons ouvert l’année 2018 avec notre Conférence annuelle sur l'éducation. Le thème et le titre de cette conférence, Les chemins de l’apprentissage, se sont imposés assez naturellement au cours d’un processus mêlant réflexions et discussions échangées autour de l’enseignement différencié. Le désir de répondre aux besoins variés et mouvants des élèves, d’offrir un enseignement inclusif, avec l’enfant placé au centre, et celui de promouvoir une éducation pour la paix, sont au coeur de l’identité de notre école depuis toujours.

The conference opened with a presentation by Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa, who has written widely on multilingualism and Mind, Brain and Education Science (MBE). The three fields associated with MBE (Neuroscience, Psychology and Education) allow educators to draw from reliable, research-based information that can inform our classroom practice. With her positive energy and dynamic presentation, Tracey shared with us useable knowledge that can be applied in classrooms to improve student learning.

While Tracey urged teachers to consider themselves as scientists, our second speaker, André Tricot, spoke of teachers as engineers. André’s work similarly brings together educational research and practice.

M. Tricot nous a poussé à réfléchir sur l’importance des processus cognitifs et les approches que les enseignants peuvent utiliser pour concevoir des situations d’apprentissages engageantes et efficaces pour nos élèves.

Nos deux premières interventions ont révélé des mythes, soit neuroscientifiques soit pédagogiques, que nous devons laisser de côté pour nous concentrer sur les méthodes d’enseignement qui aident le mieux nos élèves dans leur apprentissage.

Notre dernier interlocuteur, le sociologue et essayiste Frédéric Lenoir, nous a rappelé que nous ne devrions jamais oublier notre projet essentiel qui est d’offrir une éducation holistique. M. Lenoir nous a amené à réfléchir sur l’importance  de la philosophie, pour nous aider, nous et nos élèves, à développer notre capacité à penser et vivre  plus délibérément et consciemment une vie “bonne, heureuse, en harmonie avec soi-même et avec les autres…”

The Education Conference was soon followed by the first Thursday Afternoon Symposium of the winter term. Carrie-Douglass Rose, Head of English at the Campus des Nations, shared with us her expertise in developing appropriate resources for differentiated instruction, reminding us that differentiating can be simple and doesn’t have to require a lot of extra work. As always, the evening finished with good conversation and a warm, collegial and sociable moment over an apéritif.

Both of the monthly seminar series offered by the Institute of Learning and Teaching, “Better Together” and the “Thursday Afternoon Symposium,” continue to run throughout the school year. We hope you will join us! Registration for participation in all Institute training sessions is through the Institute website. Au mois de novembre, la première cohorte du Microprogramme en philosophie pour les enfants a fêté la remise de diplômes.

Quelle joie de partager notre appréciation de cet outil précieux pour une éducation à la paix!

PGCE International

This year’s cohort in our PGCE International teacher training program is an exceptional group. Karen Taylor joined them in Durham in early January for the School of Education’s annual Reflective Practice Conference where she offered a keynote address on International Mindedness. The trainees returned to Geneva with renewed vigor and excitement as they prepare for their second School Experience placement.

Please remember that outside speakers and seminars offered through the PGCE are open to Ecolint staff and are well worth the time. Each January, for example, Alison Ball runs a two-day seminar “Supporting Our Students” with collaboration from a number of colleagues across the Foundation. This year our trainees met at La Châtaigneraie to explore topics such as:

Working with students with sensory, physical challenges and impairments:

• ADHD
• Executive Functioning
• Supporting very able students and
• Individual Education Plans
