Education Newsletter September 2020


 

Welcome Back to School! 

Nous voici à presque un mois d'école déjà! Nous nous adaptons encore aux nouvelles habitudes de comportement hygiénique mais quel grand plaisir de nous retrouver et d’entendre encore une fois, le son des enfants joyeux dans la cour de récréation.

En plus de maintenir les opportunités de formation continue offertes par l'Institut d'apprentissage et d'enseignement (voir ci-dessous), le Département de l'éducation se concentrera cette année sur plusieurs projets particulièrement importants : 

1) Les Principes d’apprentissage de l’Ecolint / The Learning Principles

Vous aurez déjà remarqué les affiches sur les principes d'apprentissage dans vos écoles. Conformément au premier pilier des ambitions stratégiques, nous travaillerons ensemble cette année pour rendre les principes d'apprentissage visibles, intégrés et compris par les enseignants, les élèves et les parents. 

These ten principles are at the core of all that we do in each of the curricular frameworks offered in our schools. Beginning with this newsletter, I will be writing a short article each month on one of the Learning Principles.

2) Préparation de l'évaluation synchronisée CIS/MSA/IB 

2022 will mark the first time that the Foundation will undertake an accreditation cycle involving all curricular programmes in all schools simultaneously (CIS/MSA/IB). 

As you know, our self-study was put on pause due to Covid-19. The CIS Team Evaluation Visit is now rescheduled for February 7-11, 2022. The Steering and Self-Study Committees will resume work this fall and will meet face-to-face on the morning of the Pedagogical Day, November 13th. Committee members and school leadership teams continue to work closely with me as we prepare the self-study report to be submitted to CIS in December 2021.

It is important that this process truly be collective and that we draw from the wisdom and perspective of the whole community as we continue our journey as a community of learners and reflective practitioners.

Il est important que ce processus soit vraiment collectif et que nous puisions dans la sagesse et la perspective de l'ensemble de la communauté alors que nous poursuivons notre cheminement en tant que communauté de praticiens réfléchis. 

3) Notre travail continu sur l'Inclusion

Members of the Inclusion Working Group continue to develop action plans in a range of areas that will allow us to live more fully our mission as articulated in Ecolint’s Statement on Inclusion, Diversity and Equity.  2019-2020 saw the successful introduction of a new Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to replace the former Individual Education Plans (IEPs).  The change in terminology is important as we seek to reflect in this, as in all domains, our understanding of how learning takes place. 

I am excited to further align our practice with current research and to provide more opportunities for students to exercise agency in communicating their learning needs. Over the course of this academic year the particular aim of the Inclusion Working Group will be to ensure a common language and essential agreements about the way we respond to neurodiversity in our classrooms. 

Dans ce domaine comme dans d'autres, il est important de s'assurer que nous suivons les meilleures pratiques pédagogiques et les recherches les plus récentes dont nous disposons afin de mieux servir les enfants qui nous sont confiés. Nous savons aussi que la collaboration, les équipes interdisciplinaires et l'enseignement différencié profiteront à tous nos élèves et permettront à ceux qui ont des besoins particuliers de vivre une école réellement inclusive.

4) Celebrating another year of Ecolint/Durham University Initial Teacher Training Programme (PGCE International)/ IBctl

As we begin the academic year 2020/21, our initial teacher training programme, a collaboration between Durham University UK and Ecolint and joined also by partner schools for teaching placements, has opened its doors for another year of intense and exciting professional training.

Dirigée par la directrice des études professionnelles, Tanya Day Clark, notre volée de formation initiale a commencé son programme. Nous souhaitons aux nouveaux étudiants la bienvenue dans nos écoles alors qu'ils entament leur cursus d'études pour embrasser la profession d’enseignant et nous sommes reconnaissants à nos collègues et à nos écoles partenaires, tant en Suisse que dans le monde entier, pour leur collaboration constante.

In July, the Durham University Exam Board confirmed the most recent successful graduates from the 2019-20 PGCE (International)/IBctl Programme. Members of the 2020/21 cohort have joined more than 130 past graduates who are now working both locally and in many schools in countries around the world. 

Our new cohort 2020/21, comprising of 14 trainees, has now begun their programme. As in other years they are from varied previous professional backgrounds including this year: finance, law, event management, international relations, strategic planning and political science, to name but a few. We welcome them to our schools as they begin their course of study to join the teaching profession and are grateful to our colleagues and partner schools, both in Switzerland and in countries around the globe, for their continuing collaboration.

If you would like to support teachers in training, we would welcome your participation in this programme through becoming a mentor on the programme during the students’ school experience placements. Please contact tanya.dayclark@ecolint.ch if you are interested.

The learning process goes both ways as the questions posed by the students on the PGCE (International) / IBctl inevitably inspire us to think critically, deliberately and deeply on what we do in our classrooms and why. 

5) Institute Courses 2020-2021

The Institute team has been working feverishly to put the final details in place for an exciting year of professional development opportunities. Nous avons la chance de voir s’offrir à nous autant d’occasions de développement professionnel et d’engagement intellectuel.

Vous vous souvenez peut-être qu'un appel à candidatures a été envoyé au printemps afin de solliciter une bourse entièrement financée pour effectuer le MAS en Éducation internationale et recherche, un programme en collaboration avec l’Université de Genève. Félicitations à nos collègues qui ont bénéficié de cette opportunité !

New course offering by Eowyn Crisfield and Oxford Brookes University! 

The Multilingual Learner: Theory to Practice

This course has been developed for non-language specialists in both primary and secondary schools!

Multilingual learners are the majority in most international school classrooms, and bring with them unique experiences and challenges for teaching and learning. This modular professional development course is designed to centre the multilingual learner through investigation of theory, research, and practice. Each module will begin with a review of current research on the theme, and be followed by reflection and application through a tutorial process. Themes will include instructed second language acquisition (ISLA), theories of bilingualism, bilingual and multilingual approaches in curriculum design, translanguaging (theories and pedagogies), literacy development and assessment.

Participants will develop a deep understanding of the multilingual learner, and the ability to apply this understanding to the development of appropriate curricula and pedagogy to create a holistic, inclusive environment for our multilingual learners. For more information click here!

6) Journal de recherches

This edition of Ecolint’s Research Journal includes:

  • Articles based on presentations at the RIPE Conference held in June 2020
  • The work of independent researchers collaborating with Ecolint Schools, and 
  • Research carried out by Year 13 students on their experience with Global Citizenship Education at the International School of Geneva.
